My life has been a process of gathering labels and subverting them.
Through an interdisciplinary practice, my work investigates the interactions between the complex and diverse systems that make up the frameworks of our contemporary society. Drawing inspiration from mankind’s pursuit of universal truths, I illustrate the changing relationships between the tangible and intangible systems that humans design. Over time, the interconnectedness of man-made systems has woven together a new kind of environment just as diverse and multifaceted as our natural one. In my work, this landscape is given physical form, highlighting the map-territory relationship and its origins as a purely human invention.
I work sculpturally with steel, wood, and kinetic technologies on large scale installations, and illustrate using mixed drawing and printmaking media. As a part of my process, I invent and use systems as a means of commentary on the complicated relationships within modern society. The systems I use can range from complex mechanical structures to a series of basic rules. By mixing and merging these systems in a variety of media, their symbiosis and antagonisms surface in the emotional and contemplative responses of viewers.
